somewhere in between

if you peered into my skull, like it were a crystal ball,
a gull would fly out, taking with it a strand of
leaves, crumpled and colorful from an
autumn breeze, they would gallop across
the wind into the horizon, the sun burning
the dashboard above my eyes, my forehead would read
“light as lead, just as alive as dead”
caught in between, wrapped up in strings
of lovely things that create tangled webs and
finger puppets in dreams
