Poetry from Brianna Dawn.

when life leaves trees

a tree’s heart aches
yet never holds
its breath even
when we bring it death –
strip it down, lay out
its life lines on floors,
tables, and chairs –
all that’s left of them
in the wild is their roots
we raked up the rest
and burned without
thought or care
